Is travelling with young kids by plane a daunting prospect for you?
I often hear parents reminiscing about when they took their children on holiday and had a terrible time with screaming tantrums etc. Spending hours in an airplane can be a daunting experience for children and here are some tips that will help you prepare for your journey.
- Generally speaking, in this day and age, airlines cater well for small children and I suggest that you query the various airlines to see what activities they provide before deciding to travel with them.
- Take a supply of nappies/diapers so you have them handy when they are needed.
- If your child is on formula check with the airline to see if you are able to bring your own and whether the staff can heat it on board.
- Aim to get seats at the front of the plane when you book, with no one else in front of you. This will minimise disruptions to other passengers when your child needs to go to the toilet or for a walk.
- When you get on the plane take your children’s shoes off and let them put on the socks that the airline provides. This will settle them into the flight.
- Take items that your children enjoy (check with the airline first to ensure that you don’t take anything that is not allowed) such as their favourite toy or book.
- If your child is old enough, give them the chance to be a part of the adventure by letting them carry their own bags. You can give them a bag or backpack or if you want to put more in, perhaps a small suitcase on wheels which is easy to pull along.
- You want to do all you can to ensure that your child is able to sleep during the flight and in my experience there are plenty of natural remedies that an aromatherapist or naturopath can advise you on.
- In my experience, children tend to get their meals first, so after they have finished, get them ready for sleep by reading them a favourite story or helping them find some music that they can listen to.
I hope you find these tips of assistance when you next travel.
